Are cities loosing their exclusivity?

It seems to me that as time advances, regions in the world are more and more loosing their architectural exclusivity in a way.

Even if I am no expert, I can reasonably say that modern architecture is almost the same everywhere, 100 years ago, each region of the world, let alone each city had a very distinct architectural style, I mean, the buildings in Boston had absolutly nothing in comon with the buildings in Spain who had nothing in comon with those in Shanghai etc.

But now it seems you have similar tower blocks, offices, houses everywhere to some extend, today a big part of a city's uniqueness in architecture is due to its past and not its present.

The construction frenzy China is experiencing at the moment is a very good exemple of this, those towers could be constructed anywhere, the apartment blocks too etc. Nowhere can we see cities that are inventing their own architectural style and exclusivity, of course there are exeptions, some of the towers going up in Dubai would be seen as UFOs in Stockholm, but this has more to do with the climate, as they would fit well in Miami or Istanbull.

Here in the Paris suburbs, I think it really started with the construction of all those projects in the 60's 70's, similar to what could be found in the USSR and it's satelite countries, nowadays all constructions have no speciality, and the apartments and houses I see being constructed around me I could easily see anywhere in Europe and even in Asia. The attempts to create something different are rare and only make a very small part of all that is constructed.

So what do you people think about this?>
